ICYMI: 90 Organizations Urge Congress to “Tax the Greedy Billionaires” Instead of Cutting Critical Programs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning as the House prepares to vote for a budget resolution that guts critical programs in order to fund tax breaks for the ultra-rich, progressive lawmakers joined representatives from a coalition of 90 organizations, including People’s Action, MoveOn, and Indivisible, to deliver a clear and bold message to Congress: Don’t slash programs that working families depend on—tax the greedy billionaires now.
The “Tax the Greedy Billionaires” (TGB) coalition delivered a letter to Congress urging members to address the extreme wealth concentration undermining our democracy, the economy, and social cohesion.
“The scope of this greed is something that we have never ever seen before in this country and we should not accept it as normal in the United States of America,” declared Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) during the event.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-7) emphasized the campaign’s core message: “We need to focus on the greedy billionaires and make them pay their fair share […] Don’t be distracted, let’s make these greedy billionaires pay.”
The coalition highlighted that billionaire wealth has reached unprecedented levels, with approximately 800 U.S. billionaires collectively worth close to $7 trillion—exceeding the combined wealth of the bottom 67 million American households.
“We can have a country that is better off for small business owners and for workers alike if we just tax the billionaires instead of funding the billionaires,” said Rep. Greg Casar (TX-35), adding, “Instead of a tax break for greedy billionaires, we need to tax those greedy billionaires and expand the programs that working people deserve.“
The campaign connects billionaire wealth concentration to multiple crises affecting Americans:
- Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-5) linked taxation to healthcare access: “So I say this: Tax the greedy billionaires. Tax them so that no parent has to choose between groceries and a doctor’s visit. Tax them so our hospitals can stay open, our research can continue and our communities can thrive.”
- Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) highlighted the devastating environmental impacts: “The climate crisis is a direct result of unchecked corporate greed. For decades, corporate polluters have poisoned our neighborhoods, putting profits over people’s lives.”
Throughout the tax debate, the TGB coalition will work with constituencies and groups across the country to highlight how excessive concentrations of wealth are making life harder for all of us by undermining family stability, rising housing and health care costs, eroding racial justice, and devastating the climate.
